Free Walking Tour

When arriving in the metropolis, most travelers take part in the Medellin city tours to know more about its history. Not only do these tours explain the way of life of the city’s residents, but also that of the entire country.

Most of the tours in Medellin take almost five hours. It might seem like such a long time, but you definitely won’t get bored because of the places you will be visiting.

There is no fee for taking part in the tour, but it’s tip-based. So don’t forget to leave a few bills for your tour guide.

How to get there:

The tour starts outside the Alpujarra station on the pedestrian bridge. Since it’s for free, it would be best to arrive early at the set meeting location.

If it gets too crowded, the tour guides will split the big groups into smaller ones.

Only when each group reaches the desired number of people will the tour start.

Medellin Metrocable

Cable cars, as part of the city’s transportation system, are one of the most visited attractions in Medellin.

These gondolas go up the mountains of the northern and western points of Medellin. The system cuts the commute time of the people.

Aside from the convenience it provides, these gondolas allow locals and tourists to witness the economic divergence of the city.

How to get there:

Medellin metrocable has five different metrocable lines situated in different parts of the city. Each station offers pleasing sights to locals and tourists who wish to experience riding the famous gondolas.

These are the following stations you can choose from:

Laguna de Guatape

The captivating colonial town of Guatape and its towering granite rocks shouldn’t be taken off the list.

Although Guatape is not part of the city, this is still a must-visit for those who are staying nearby. Visitors will surely enjoy the colorful houses and natural beauty surrounding the place.

Also, you shouldn’t miss the famous Piedra del Peñol (Rock of Guatape). You need to climb 600 to 700 steps just to reach the top of the granite monolith. At the zenith of the rock, there is a view of the amazing scenery of the small town of El Peñol.

How to get there:

Laguna de Guatape is a tourist destination that can be found in the neighboring town of Guatape.

If it is your first time visiting the place, you need to go to the North Terminal. At the ground floor, look for booth #14 and purchase a ticket going to Guatape.

The ticket from Medellin to Guatape costs 16,000 COP ($4.37).

To complete your ride, grab some Colombian snacks while on the bus. But never forget to tell the driver to drop you off at your destination.

Comuna 13

Comuna 13 was once considered a notoriously dangerous part of Medellin.

During the 80s and 90s, the place was run by violent drug organizations that used the underprivileged residences. This was also used as entrance and exit routes for their illegal transactions.

However, this serious, perilous impression of the community was changed in 2002 when President Alvaro Uribe launched Operation Orion. This program was controversial at first, but was a success for the people of Colombia because it changed how people looked at the community.

Currently, locals and tourists enjoy the escalators built in the area. The walls of the houses are also painted by some great artists of the city. Some of the paintings are influenced by the masterpieces of Fernando Botero.

How to get there:

Comuna 13 is located in Zone 4 downtown. To arrive at the place, you need to take the metrocable to San Javier metro station.

From the metro station, you can walk going to the foot of the escalators in 15 to 20 minutes or you can ride a 221i or 225i bus.

Note: You can either go there alone or with a local guide. Some parts of Comuna 13 still suffer from poverty and violence, which means unexpected situations risking your safety may happen, so you need to be prepared to know how to deal with such scenarios.

With that being said, it would be better to be accompanied by a guide to make your trip safer and more interesting.

Parque Arvi

Parque Arvi is located outside Medellin. It is best known for its programs towards conservation and sustainability.

The park is a nature preserve and archeological site located in Aburra Valley. In addition, it is a habitat of wildflowers and animals, nature tours, and hiking trails.

Aside from the floras and faunas of Parque Arvi, it also has regional food markets and outdoor activities you can take part in to complete your stay.

During your day trips, you can enjoy nature tours or go cycling. Most people who go hiking in Medellin are in favor of this park. At nighttime, you can experience a guided-hike accompanied with music and storytelling of Medellin’s history and folklore.

How to get there:

The best way to arrive at the park is through the Medellin cable cars. For first time travelers, take Line A to the Acevedo metro station. From there, use the stairs to go to Line K to Santo Domingo station.

Once you arrive at Santo Domingo station, transfer to Line L to Parque Arvi. Travel time takes about 20 minutes.

The fare from Line K to Santo Domingo is around 2,355 COP if you have a Civica card and 2,650 COP if you don’t have one.

The metrocable line to Parque Arvi costs 10,000 COP if you’re connected with Sisben, which costs lower than the standard fare.

A roundtrip to Parque Arví on the metro is 24,710 pesos with a Civica card and 25,300 pesos without one.
